Over the years we’ve featured many quilts by designer and fiber artist Malka Dubrawsky. Her work is so desirable because it always has a surprise element in the design. What we love about her aesthetic is that the quilts are all simple and easily pieced, but she always designs her patterns “with a twist”. Malka loves spare, clean shapes, but can’t help throwing in a surprising color change, unexpected technique, or brilliant new interpretation of a traditional design. Those subtle and sometimes not so subtle changes make her quilts seem more complicated than they really are.
Constructed from solid rectangles, “Crossroads” relies on color grouping and the placement of blocks to create a secondary pattern of ‘plus’ signs that – depending on value – recede or emerge on the surface of the quilt. To finish it with a bit of additional style, Malka includes a pieced binding, that allows the design to flow across the quilt top and extend to the edge of the quilt. Such a gorgeous design and a unique finishing technique!
