About this Quilt

quilt-desert-bloom-flatThe palette of Kate’s modified log cabin design brings to mind the hardy plants that manage to thrive under the bright sunshine and crystal blue skies of the desert. The modified log cabin blocks cleverly disguise where one block ends and another begins, creating an interwoven grid of light, shadow, color and shape.

Though not apparent at first glance, Kate used 3 different white prints in the blocks, placed deliberately and consistently in all blocks, for an extra touch of complexity. Though this block is not difficult to sew, it is versatile and unique because of all the different patches that make up the block. Each round of logs is pieced in such a way to create the slightly wavy crisscross effect.

Our pattern includes ways of mixing up this pattern to demonstrate all the creative possibilities you could explore. There are several alternate block layouts that show how drastically the design can be altered by twisting and turning the block around. We also show a different block coloration, for just one example of the many ways this block can look wildly different, depending on the colors, prints and placement you choose.
