Fly Away Quilt

About this Quilt

Finished Size : 54" × 60"

Finished Blocks : 8" square

Designed By : Suzy Williams

Inspired by a Gee’s Bend design called “Birds In Flight” by Mertlene Perkins, this Flight Delight Quilt by Suzy Quilts blogger Suzy Williams uses negative space and subtle changes in color to create a delicate composition. By scattering some triangles in the pattern, the “birds” appear to be flying away from the flock, adding an element of surprise and spontaneity to an otherwise orderly design.

For more efficient cutting and piecing, the Fly Away Quilt pattern includes illustrated step-by-step directions for making eight Half-Square Triangles at a time as well as tips for assembling the columns in each block and laying out the grid pattern for the quilt top.

Make the Fly Away Quilt as shown using the black, gray, and gold fabrics or a create a scrap-friendly version with vibrant pieces culled from your stash that contrast the background fabric and use a repeating hue for the “birds” that are flying in a different direction from the flock.

Regardless of the colors you choose to use, this delightful design will make an eye-catching accessory for any room in your house.
