Module Quilt

About this Quilt

Finished Size : 52" square

Finished Blocks : 12" square

Designed By : Christine Barnes

Despite its ultra simplicity, designer Christine Barnes’ Module Quilt packs quite a punch with vibrant hues set against a neutral background fabric. Christine designed the 52″ square wall or lap quilt with low-volume prints and charming plaids that highlight the beauty of the basic grid pattern and underscore why the Nine Patch has remained popular for generations. Not only is it a great block for new quilters, but it is also incredibly versatile.

For maximum color impact when choosing fabrics, Christine advises, “Don’t be afraid to include colors that aren’t in the center plaid square—they add a surprise element and make your design more original. Also, place solid squares of similar value and color side by side in the blocks. These create new shapes and modernize the classic Nine Patch.”

This twist on tradition gives the classic block a contemporary feel, adding interest and depth to a beginner-friendly design that manages to look more complicated to make than it actually is. The Module Quilt is also scrap-friendly and simple enough that you can make one for yourself and another to gift or donate. You can also make the Module Quilt into a group project simply by assigning one Nine Patch to each participant.
