Everyone loves puzzles, and this quilt asks the viewer to play along, imagining interlocking puzzle pieces moving in and out of the design.
Melanie Tauzon’s “Query” quilt is a sophisticated study in color value and shape placement. Inspired by interlocking floor tiles, Melanie asks and invites questions about the relationships between the shapes in this quilt. How do they fit together? How do the colors change depending on their placement in the design? Where does the missing piece go? One simple block makes these intriguing shapes in this modern, geometric quilt.
Although it might look too complicated for a beginning quilter to construct, this is yet another visual trick. The block is simple and easy to construct. The illusion of intricacy comes with fabric placement and shifting color values.
It is a speedy quilt that asks – and answers – all of the right questions!
