Winds of Autumn

About this Quilt

As the days grow shorter and the nights grow crisper, you’ll delight in the rich tones of Jennifer Thomas’ Winds of Autumn quilt. The soft pink fabric offers a reminder of past summer’s rose gardens now ready for a winter nap. The contrasting brown and tan prints in Jennifer’s Windy Days block tell of blustery autumn days.

After a busy summer, we’re inclined to make time for ourselves as we turn our focus indoors. Many quilters welcome autumn’s chilly weather and the comfort we seek from our quilts. Jennifer Thomas’ Winds of Autumn brings a celebration of autumn indoors, without the nip of cold on the toes!

This quilt also inspired us to come up with a new technique, our Sew Easy: Quick-Pieced Split Point Units. The Missouri Star quilt blocks in this pattern feature 160 red triangles and 160 pink triangles—and they need to be arranged into rights and lefts before being sewn together.

At Love of Quilting, we like to try the most efficient, dependable way to create a quilt. With all those bias edges and right-and-lefts, it just seemed like there had to be an easier way. And there is! We modified our Sew Easy Lesson for Quick-Pieced Flying Geese Units, to come up with our new Sew Easy Lesson: Quick-Pieced Split Point Units! First you make Triangle-Square Units, and then use those to make Flying Geese—perfect Missouri Star points every time!
