The Allegiance Quilt: “It Worked Up So Nicely”

Diane Tomlinson, a regular Fons & Porter contributor, loved the Stars & Stripes fabric collection from Northcott, and designed Allegiance to work with that line. “It worked up so nicely, that I used the same line again, in In Honor Of.”

The rich batiks add a dynamic quality to what would be the solid blues and reds and whites of the stripes. And the star prints are perfectly on point. With In Honor Of  Diane took “on point” literally, adding in a striped fabric from the collection and setting the quilt blocks on point.

With Allegiance, though, she kept it simpler and more achievable, with some basic techniques: Flying Geese units, strips sets, and sashing.

Allegiance is quick to make, fun to make, and inspiring to make—which maybe is why Diane sees Allegiance show up all the time in social media. “It’s always so fun to see your work pop up on someone’s Facebook or Instagram,” says Diane. “And I see this quilt pretty often.”

If you’re interested in creating a Quilt of Valor, this is really an ideal pattern. “I have taught this quilt many times at the Original Sewing and Quilting Expo, and at Guild meetings. It’s simple and quick,” says Diane. “You can get about half the quilt done in a day.”

Diane has made multiple Quilts of Valor, donating many through her local guild in Winterset, Iowa.
