Hello to all McCall’s Quilting blog readers! First, let me introduce you to my quilt, Big Time:

I have to say I love the Go Big or Go Home fabrics by Another Point of View for Windham Fabrics – they are fun, a little quirky and they are colorful!  The aqua, lime and gray fabrics are probably my favorites in the entire line.  I knew when I saw all the fabrics, I wanted to include as many colors as I could in the design.  I generally have no problem just throwing in all the colors in the mix, as long as I contrast the busy feeling with either white or gray in the quilt.  In Big Time, I used both white and gray.  Those who know me know I love gray.  So, in Big Time, I showcase the gray in rather “big” measures, and used the bright colors to act as accents in the overall design.

I wanted the blocks to be easy to construct so that quilters don’t end up taking a huge amount of time to finish piecing the bed quilt top.  So I chose big and simple blocks.  There  are also no seams to match up sewing the blocks into rows.  So, that speeds up the  piecing process as well.  I would suggest starch-pressing the fabrics before cutting the thin pieces in the square blocks.  That would help the blocks to not go “wonky” since some of  the thin pieces are actually placed at the outer edge of the square blocks. McCall’s has prepared a free pattern for the chain-effect Big Time Quilt Block for you to download!

Envisioning the use of quilt:
I can see this quilt being used on a teenager’s bed, or even a bright and cheerful guest bed.  It will definitely also fit any contemporary style in home decor.

Leftovers:
If there are leftover fabrics, I can see individual blocks being made into table/candle mats  or throw pillows to match the quilt.  If enough fabrics are available to make a few blocks,  they can be used to make a runner or banner.
