Happy Quilts Cover 600px Book Review: Happy QuiltsOK, I admit I was in love with this book before even opening it. Why? Because some of the kids on the cover quilt are wearing glasses. As an eyeglasses-wearing nerdy kid back in the day, it always made me sad that no dolls or books or movies featured any other kids wearing glasses, so these bespectacled cuties immediately touched my heart.

THEN…I opened the book.

Oh. My. Goodness. The ten kid-friendly quilt patterns inside are absolutely adorable. Hound dogs, bears, superheroes, princesses, friendly farm animals, robots, race cars, and the cutest monsters anywhere are just some of the characters included in these designs. Here’s one of my favorites:

I’m usually more a dog person than a cat person, but these pussycats have personality! And I love the kittens and mice added into some of the blocks.

Besides 10 must-make quilt patterns, every project also includes an optional soft-toy pattern. Some of them are so sweet, they’d be great even without their quilts! Here are Deep Blue Sea and the coordinating mermaid softie:

If you quilt and/or sew for children, I urge you to order this book NOW. There is so much inspiration and creativity in these pages, and the patterns are very well written and easy to follow. There are also sections on quilt-making and toy-making basic skills, so even a complete beginner can have success with these projects. Simple piecing and fast fusible applique make all the quilts a joy to assemble and personalize. I can’t say it too strongly…these are unique, creative patterns kids are going to love SO MUCH!
