Design Wall Tuesday: Flying Geese with Stripes and More

Welcome, to Design Wall Tuesday! The editors who make McCall’s Quilting and Quiltmaker magazines did some fun stitching this weekend, and we hope you did too. Here’s, what a few of our team members are working on in their home sewing spaces:

Blocks for the future project.

Although I’m still fixing to get ready with my quilt for a future issue of Quiltmaker, I was finally able to start sewing some blocks together.

The cutting mat is empty. The sewing machine light is dark. No sewing for me this weekend. After finishing a throw- and a twin-size quilt top in a little more than a week (whew!), I needed a break. It was a beautiful weekend, so it was time to work outside. I planted seeds and my husband planted a little peach tree. Grow, baby, grow!

Quilting on the back.

This weekend I wasn’t able to get as much sewing time as I had hoped, but I did make progress on quilting my version of Nuts & Bolts. I’m pretty much done with the quilting in the center, and now I just have to complete the quilting in the borders! Heres some of the quilting as seen on the back of the quilt.

Future Quick Quilts pattern.

If you ask me what my favorite color is, I probably wouldn’t say blue. But many, many of my quilts are predominantly blue. Not surprisingly, I fell in love with these mostly blue fabrics from Island Batik so I volunteered to make a quilt designed by Jessica Caldwell for an upcoming issue of McCall’s Quick Quilts. I got everything cut and started piecing this weekend.

I spent Friday evening and part ofSaturdaytroubleshooting the free-motion quilting settings on a new-to-me sewing machine. It works great for piecing and walking-foot quilting, but I haven’t gotten the tension right for free-motion quilting yet. Since there was nothing more I could do about it come Saturday evening, I thought ahead to other quilts I want to make and decided to finally cut into some Jennifer Paganelli fat quarters I’ve been hoarding for six or so years.

Fast flying geese

The pattern I have in mind calls for over 200 flying geese so I started by making some test units to see if those stripes and prints would work, and I think they will. It’s funny how good it feels to put precious fabrics to use when the time is right, isn’t it?

That’s it for this week. We had some nice weather so I think a few of us were spending time outside and away from our studios! Be sure to stop by next week for more Design Wall Tuesday!
