Design Wall Tuesday: Free Motion Machine Quilting

Welcome to Design Wall Tuesday! A couple of our editors have been busy either machine quilting or getting ready to machine quilt. Check out what Lori and Mary Kate have been working on.

From Acquisitions Editor, Lori Baker:

It’s nearly all 8 1/2″ batik squares that I cut with an AccuQuilt Go! at work. It has a couple of crazy quilt blocks, a couple of machine embroidered squares and 20+ squares with decorative stitching. I’m anxious to get it basted so I can get the quilting done.

I promise this is the last time I’ll write about my Not-Precious Quilt that I’ve been telling you about the past few weeks, but I want to share this for the benefit of anyone out there who might be experiencing issues with free motion machine quilting. Again, I quilted my queen-size quilt on a Grace Q’nique longarm machine, but I learned how to free motion quilt the coordinating pillow shams on my home machine.

Last week I shared a photo of the first pillow sham I quilted using an open-toe embroidery foot and the machine’s spring action setting. Although I got the tension evened out, I still wasn’t happy with the lines I was quilting—they just weren’t as fluid as I’d hoped. So for the second sham, I switched to the machine’s free-motion floating setting and used a clear embroidery foot that does not hop, and I liked both the experience and the results a lot more. The feeling of quilting is still taking some getting used to, but I’m a lot more inclined to practice using this set-up.

I’m still working on finishing the hand stitching on the bindings, but once these pillow shams are done, I’ll be spending more time practicing my FMQ so I can apply what I’ve learned to quilting the throw quilt I want to give a particular special someone.

That’s it for this week. Stop by next week for some more quilty inspiration from our editors!
