Miniature quilts are continuing to gain popularity among both traditional and modern quilters. These adorable little projects are perfect for displaying in so many ways, and they make marvelous gift quilts. Log Cabin quilts have been extremely popular for as long as there have been American quilts. So what could be better than a miniature Log Cabin quilt design? How about a FREE pattern for it? This week’s Friday Freebie is the Chickadees miniature Log Cabin quilt pattern, designed by Carol Hanson.
This little cutie is just 18 1/2″ x 19 1/2″, and the tiny Log Cabin quilt blocks finish at 3″ square. Carol designed this quilt to showcase fabrics from the Chickadees & Berries collection by Jackie Robinson for Benartex.
This mini quilt pattern could be easily adapted to use stash fabrics, especially if you have a panel print waiting around for an inspiring idea. The chickadee sections in the sample quilt are cut from the panel print at right. However, any print that allows you to cut 2 pretty 6 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ rectangles will work. Carol cut her featured rectangles at 6 1/2″ x 11 1/2″ and added spacer strips, so that’s another option. She used the remainder of the panel to make a lovely wall quilt patterned in the December 2015/January 2016 issue of McCall’s Quick Quilts.
Making little Log Cabin blocks is so much fun, and a great way to get started on a mini if you haven’t tried one before. I hope you’ll enjoy this sweet, simple miniature quilt pattern!
