When I learned it was my turn to do I Love This Quilt for the May/June 2019 issue of McCall’s Quilting, I was overwhelmed. How do you choose a quilt to make from decades of McCall’s Quilting magazines? I searched and I searched and narrowed it down to six quilts. Then I spotted His Royal Union Jack by Joyce Robinson in the January/February 2014 issue of McCall’s Quilting. It stopped me dead in my tracks. This design just spoke to me.

I chose an assortment of Grunge, Seeing Stars and Hits The Spot by BasicGrey, Compositions by BasicGrey, and Modern Background–Paper by Zen Chic, all for Moda. It is a bit more red, white and blue than the original but I think it still has a bit of the distressed feel that the batiks gave to Joyce’s design.

In order to fit my bed, I plan to make extra blocks. I’ve never paper pieced on such a large scale before, so this will be a first for me. It will also be my first king sized quilt. I’m excited! Instead of a three-block by six-block layout, I am making a ten-block by ten-block layout.

For paper piecing projects, usually I prefer something that I don’t need to remove in the final step like Quilter’s Select Print & Piece by Alex Anderson, however, I will need 400 sheets and this option was a little bit pricey since I would need sixteen packages. I purchased Carol Doak foundation paper, which will have to be removed at the end, but it is thinner than regular copier paper and I have heard good things about its ease of use.

I have already begun a few blocks and am loving the design so much. Will you make this quilt with me? I would love to see your progress! Tag your pictures on instagram with #ilovethisquilt_mcq and feel free to tag me @SewSupportive so I can cheer you on.
