Make Your Own Prayer Flags: Inspirational Fabric Art Blog Hop – Quilting Daily

Our best-selling online course is back and better than ever! APQS Longarm Certification Sponsored by Quilting Daily has been revised and updated. Not only will you learn how to make beautiful quilts, you’ll also gain skills to turn your passion into a paycheck with tips on how to run your own quilting business.

When I make small fiber art projects such as prayer flags, I usually start with a vintage textile like a linen napkin or a salvaged piece of a worn-out quilt as my base.

Fabric art on the fly: My prayer flags made with a blank banner,
stenciled paint, and odds and ends from my stash.

Recently, though, I discovered blank, ready-to-decorate banner flags from Moda. You can paint, dye, stitch, and embellish the banner as you like. Plus, each flag is attached to the next with a button and buttonhole, so you can detach and rearrange them.

Over the weekend, I created the banner you see here, using the blank flags, my vintage fabric stash, a Rebekah Meier stencil, and some creative inspiration from our downloadable eBook Prayer Flags: Make Banners of Hope & Peace from Fabric Scraps and Fibers. Our readers provided more than 550 miniature flags for this publication . . . the photography is beautiful, and the messages are heartfelt.

To give you an idea of the many different ways you can apply your sewing and surface design talents to making prayer flags, we asked six fiber artists to decorate one of these blank banners their own way. Next week, each artist will feature their prayer flags and technique on their blogs.

These small but meaningful flags have touched many hearts, and continue to spread hope and peace as they are given as gifts, shared on social media, and draped outdoors.

I hope we inspire you to create your own prayer flags, using our Prayer Flags Value Pack (the banner blanks and our Prayer Flags eBook), our Prayer Flags eBook, or just your stash and your imagination.
