Solid color quilts are often associated with a modern aesthetic, but (and maybe this is the age old question) do solids make a modern quilt, or are modern quilts often just made with solid fabric? Unable to ponder this question to it’s fullest extent I have decided in the end that I just like the look of solids and color play in modern designs. Solids allow for a huge variety of color interaction, hue subtly, and general fun. While all of the quilts below are beautiful in their own right, they are infinity variable in terms of your color choices. Make them more masculine, rainbow-tastic, or subtle and chic with neutrals.
Designed by Natalia Bonner and Kathleen Whiting, this quilt seems to undulate just like water lapping at the shore. It’s an optical illusion though—this quilt uses a Log Cabin blog to create its wavy presence. Simple to construct it packs a huge impact. The placement of the white strips and center squares contribute to the movement in this piece. What would happen if the color placement was changed? I can’t wait to see!
Hands down, this quilt is a stunner. Neon orange and hot pink unite in this quilt inspired by the art of paper cutting. This quilt, as the one above, seems to move as your eye searches for the breaks in color. Siliva Sutters created a masterpiece in symmetry—this quilt is fun to look at and fun to make! What other color options would you choose? I think a stark black and white would be interesting. What about a series of these all hung together in different colorways? The possibilities are endless!
Isn’t this quilt so sweet? Designer Katie Clark Blakesley enlarged this beautiful star to be the center attraction of this piece. Framed by simple matchstick quilting this quilt is perfect for a child’s room. Measuring 36″ square, make four stars for a larger piece. This quilt is great to change up the colorway to suit the recipient. Girl, boy, grandpa or friend—pick their five favorite colors and combine them for a gift that is sure to please!
