One Stunning Quilt: Morris Star Block-of-the-Month

Introducing the newest block-of-the-month pattern exclusively from The Quilting Company: Morris Star, a medallion-style bed quilt that puts beautiful William Morris prints in the spotlight.

Morris Star Block of the Month

Made with time-honored template techniques, this stunning quilt is “a magnum opus” according to BOM video instructor Jenny Kae Parks. If you’re an intermediate- to advanced-level quilter looking to put your skills to work in an heirloom-quality quilt, this is for you.

This queen-size quilt features fabric with exclusive designs, some dating back to 1861, from the archives of The Original Morris & Co. They bring to life the artistry, vision and authentic style of William Morris. The medallion center and pieced Kaleidoscope border only accentuate the striking fabrics and style even more.

There is an instructional video for each installment in this eight-month BOM, which will result in a 104” x 104” finished quilt top. The video for the first month is already available; click here to watch the free Part 1 video in which Jenny demonstrates how to make the Kaleidoscope blocks.

Patterson-Tricia-150x150Our editorial director Tricia Patterson will be blogging about her progress making Morris Star. Tricia is an experienced quilter who fell in love with the William Morris prints and is looking forward to making her own version of this showstopper. She’s received her fabric for the first month and is already at work on it!

Regarding Morris Star. Where do I find Tricia Patterson’s blog. The website says starting June 7th. When I click on the links it says page not found. Where is the comraderie with other quilters? I asked about this on June 13th with no response.

question. . .when I watch the setting triangles and especially the part about keeping the pattern in one direction. . I can not align the video with the directions that were sent to me. The directions say to cut 4 13 1.2 wide strips. From strips cut 10 13 1/4 squares. . . . . etc. However, when you look at the large squares in the video the design is on point and not from a strip, the smaller squares are from a strip (look at video at 1:22). So my question is, what are the directions and how much material do I need to cut the small squares from strips and the large squares on point?

      Hi Horace,
The cutting instructions are correct, you do not need to cut any squares on point. If you want to have enough matching triangles with the print going the same direction, you need to cut the extra 2 squares and cut them in half diagonally. Some of the triangles created with this method will be extra so just set them aside. There is enough fabric in the 4 strips to cut 12 triangles instead of just 10.
