Quilt Group Project Ideas: Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks

The Quilting Company staff is always looking for quilt group project ideas to share with our readers, from guild challenges to small group block swaps. And, we love to hear about how our readers are using the designs we share through our publications.

Lori Baker, our Acquisitions Editor, told me about a grassroots online Facebook group Quiltmaker’s 1000 Block Challenge that has accumulated 766 members since January 3rd 2018. The co-founders regularly post a group challenge, identifying specific blocks for the group to make from the Quiltmaker’s 1,000 Blocks book published in 2015.

I’ve known of local quilting groups participating in challenges, within their group and sharing their creations through their own Facebook communities, but the 1,000-block challenge is the first dedicated online quilting project I’ve heard about. Needless to say, we are excited our block publications have inspired the formation of a digital group, with members participating across the globe!

Quiltmaker magazine published the first volume of Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks 9 years ago. Each of the Spring and Fall publications includes block designs representing a variety of quilting techniques: pieced, needle-turn and fusible applique, foundation pieced and blocks with a mixture of one or more techniques and embellishments. We have block designs from everywhere; many from the designers you frequently see in The Quilting Company publications.

We’ve published 16 volumes of Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks along with several milestone print and online publications: 100 Blocks Vol. 1-10 Bundle, 200 Blocks from Quiltmaker Magazine and Quiltmaker’s 1,000 Blocks (the publication used by the online group mentioned above). Need inspiration for quilt projects? Check out Quilts from 100 Blocks Holiday Collection and the spin-off publication Quilts from 100 Blocks that gives you examples of quilt designs using many of the block designs.

Around the Town

Modern Twist

The 100 Blocks series offers inspiration for everyone! Your group can create an original quilt design using blocks around a common theme, like Denise Stark did when she incorporated vehicle blocks to make Around the Town. Or, the trendy quilt Carolyn Beam designed by joining 12 block designs in Modern Twist. Get your local or online group together to make a quilt of campers, animals or even whimsical flowers!

Happy Quilting!

The Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks, vol 16 was the last issue published and we aren’t currently releasing any new volumes into the series. Let us know if we can help answer any other questions.
