Quiltmaker September/October 2019: Make It Your Own

Do you design your own quilts? When I think back over the 25+ years that I have been quilting, I can see my progression. At first, I made the quilts exactly like the pattern, then using my own color palette, and then I wanted the block to be a different scale, or I wanted the quilt to be a different size. Can you relate?

In this issue, we are exploring design through medallion quilts. This classic layout is an easy way to dip your toe into the world of quilt design because anything goes! And the quilts we feature certainly prove that, including three medallion quilts, a sampler, and a few designs that feature pieced borders. My article Considering Medallions describes the concept and offers considerations for layouts and planning. As you peruse the designs, imagine how you can change up these quilts to make them your own!

Tricia Patterson, Elaine Theriault, and Terri Vanden Bosch use piecing, appliqué, English paper piecing, and smart use of fabrics to create three very individual medallion designs. Harvest Sampler by Sharon Denny Parcel is a delightful quilt that features appliqué, paper piecing, and traditional piecing. Don’t miss Autumn in Boston by Stephanie Sheridan—this quilt positively GLOWS!

If you prefer quilts that are more modern, Sunset Boulevard by Scott Hansen is an improv pieced beauty using his latest fabric collection with Banyan Batiks. While he used improv techniques to create this quilt, we offer paper foundations so you can recreate the look exactly. Modern Musings is a new column by Vivika DeNegre where she explores the modern quilting movement.

There is lots to read in this issue with our designer profiles too. Grab a cuppa and start dreaming!

Happy Halloween and Happy Quilting!
Tracy
