Small Quilting Projects Make a Big Difference: Artists Give Back

House quilt from the Heart of the Home reader challenge by Quilting Arts

The challenge

In the October/November 2018 issue of Quilting Arts Magazine, we asked our amazing readers to create house quilts for our Reader Challenge, “Artists Give Back: Heart of the Home.” These small quilting projects were to measure 14″ x 14″ and to feature a house. We received over 350 quilts from this challenge (wow!). These quilts have been donated to the House Quilt Project, and organization run by Jamie Fingal. Jamie works with an organization called Furnishing Hope, which helps families transition out of homelessness. Through Jamie’s efforts families receive a handmade quilt along with their newly furnished homes.

The response

Besides being overjoyed with the fantastic response that this challenge received, and the generosity that the small quilting projects represent—we were totally impressed with the design, style, craftsmanship, and love with which each piece was created. We cannot thank you, our readers, enough for the outpouring of support and quilts you provided. One of the aspects that struck me the most as I carefully unpackaged each quilt (an honor, and one of my favorite parts of this job) was how each artist had used techniques—such as embroidery, couching, patchwork, beading, and more—in intrinsically different ways. Even though all of the quilts have a strong, central theme, each piece is incredibly unique. A selection of house quilts is featured in the April/May 2019 issue of Quilting Arts, but we’ll share a few with you now too!
