Welcome guest blogger and quilt designer Melissa Corry. Melissa’s bed quilt Star Crossed is tailormade for using precut 10″ squares and is composed of just 16 supersized blocks that are very easy to piece. You’ll find this quilt in the McCall’s Quilting July/August 2017 issue. We’re happy to have Melissa here to talk about her quilt!
Hello fellow McCall’s Quilting readers! I’m Melissa Corry from Happy Quilting and I am so excited to be guest posting here today to share some fun tidbits about my new Star Crossed quilt!
I absolutely love using stars in my designs—they are just so classic!!! And because Star Crossed utilizes supersized blocks it will go together in no time.
If you have been following along with my blog, Happy Quilting, for any time, you know that I love Irish Chain quilts!!! In fact, the design was the inspiration for my book Irish Chain Quilts. Star Crossed is a design that I have had in mind for some time and I am so excited to finally see it done up. It uses my love of designing twists on the classic Irish Chain and adds in my all time favorite thing to piece, stars!!!
Hence the name Star Crossed. I just love how those stars twinkle over the quilt top in beautiful, floating criss-cross patterns! And the alternating of one-patch and four-patch stars adds a fun little pop in the design (click each image below for a larger view!).
Getting started on your own Star Crossed quilt is super easy because this beautiful bed size quilt is layer cake-friendly. So just grab a layer lake or other pre-cut set of 10″ squares from your stash and you are good to start cutting!! Or, this quilt would also make a great scrap buster! So if you have made that goal to use more of your scraps, you can always make a spectacular scrappy version of Star Crossed.
And just to add one more idea… how stunning would Star Crossed be as a two-color quilt!! Of course, I totally gravitated towards the classic red and white. I might have already added this to my “to make someday” list!!
Whether you pick a layer cake, scraps, or two-color palette . . . your Star Crossed quilt is going to look stunning!!! And once you have it all pieced, you are ready for some Happy Quilting!!! This design has so much beautiful white space to really allow endless amounts of creativity in the quilting. I combined several of my favorite free motion quilting designs: echoed paisleys, swirl, curls and pebbles, and I just love how all the beautiful curvy designs add a soft texture to all of that crisp piecing.
One more fun Star Crossed tidbit: McCall’s has graciously added a Free Web Bonus for this design with alternate size options!!!! Star Crossed finishes at 96″ x 96″, perfect for your bed, but if you want to make a smaller project, check out the Web Bonus for a crib size, throw size and a twin size. So fun!!
I want to say a huge thank you to McCall’s for having me here today! It has been so fun to share my Star Crossed quilt with you and I hope you just love making your own Star Crossed quilt as well! And if you do, I would love to see it! You can email me a picture at email@example.com or add it to social media with the #happyquiltingwithmc. I can’t wait to see your pictures!!!
