Carol Ann Waugh's design studio serves not only as her personal creative work space, but also as an art gallery open to the public. Carol opened aBuzz Gallery in Denver, Colorado in 2013 and the art exhibits have a strong emphasis on fiber art. Take a tour of the space and learn how Carol works with artists to help them best promote their work.
Carol Ann Waugh is motivated by stretching toward new and original. The compulsion to be different began more than 30 years ago when she tackled her first quilt and immediately realized traditional patterns were not going to work for her, so she created her own. Those early days of learning to work with fabric have given way to experimentation and curiosity that always seems to be the driving force behind her art.
Carol's inspiration often comes from the endless question: "What can I do to take this piece somewhere new, somewhere different than others have gone before?" She creates her own fabrics by using different dying and surface design techniques. Her recent works use four or five layers of surface design which may include deconstructed screen printing, painting, stamping, drawing with oil sticks and pencils, rubbings, and machine and hand stitching. She says it's about exploration where unexpected connections and juxtapositions can lead to new ideas and artistic expressions. She enjoys not having complete control over the outcome of her work and as she layers, creates each line, shape or pattern, adds or takes away color, and stitches, the decisions made after each step change the options for the next decision. It's why making art is so intriguing to her and something she is driven to do every day.
