ABOUT THE EVENTS:
Ask Me Anything
Come with your quilting life questions ready! We kick off our festivities at The Iowa, Winterset’s historic theater, purchased, restored, restored, and re-opened last year by Marianne Fons and her daughter Rebecca. Now operating as a non-profit, it’s the perfect stage upon which to hear from these three quilt designers and unique personalities. Marianne Fons, Victoria Findlay Wolfe, and Paula Nadelstern will be on stage, each with one of her own quilts, ready for you to ask them … well …. anything! Our moderator for the evening is Tony Jacobsen, designer, prolific quiltmaker, and owner of Winterset’s Piece Works Quilt Shop. Of course there will also be snacks and beverages included. While this event is open to the public, your ticket (and priority seating) is included with your retreat registration.
Iowa Quilt Museum Tour
Become part of a special tour with museum director, Megan Barrett, of their exhibit, “Blue Ribbon Winners from The Iowa State Fair.” There will be dessert, wine, and coffee, as well. (Can you tell food is an important part of the retreat?) After the tour, Lindzee Kull McCray, designer of Feed Sacks True Blue fabric line from Moda and author of Feed Sacks: The Colourful History of a Frugal Fabric, shares her inspiring trunk show.
Dinner at Local Eateries
Enjoy the casual local ambience of The North Side Café in the heart of Winterset’s Town Square for your second evening’s meal of the retreat (Friday). On Saturday evening, relax and unwind at the fabulous Covered Bridges Winery for food, fun and celebration – and a fond farewell to your retreat friends.
Special Luncheon Talks
Lunch on Friday and Saturday will feature talks by Tony Jacobsen to help inspire and fuel your passion for quilting.
Personal Quilt Workshops with Marianne Fons & Diane Tomlinson
Over two days, you will have a chance to start (and maybe complete) two different projects. But there’s more, and it’s the best part! You will be treated to two days of instruction and guidance, individual and group tutorials and inspiration from two of quilting’s finest quiltmakers, designers and educators.
Marianne, whose quilt, Darling, was inspired by Moda’s Feed Sack True Blue fabric line, offers advice about cutting, stitching accurate 1/4” seams, fast and easy half-square triangle construction and more. Darling incorporates a wonderful and unique curved border, as well, so there is much to learn, and nobody better to learn it from than Marianne Fons!
Diane’s table runner is taken from her Starflower Quilt Design, and features Diane’s tried and true method for inset seams. You’ll learn and have a chance to practice under Diane’s watchful eye, after she shares her no-fail, always-perfect technique for creating these seams perfectly. Easier than it looks, your runner can easily be completed during the retreat, and your ¼” seams, with insets intact, will be perfectly executed!
