One of our favorite things to do for the Love of Quilting television show is to share reader-submitted tips – our editors review every tip submitted and share the most creative and unique on the air (if you have a tip you’d like to share, we’d love to hear from you! Here’s our quilting tips submission form). Here are a handful of tips that were selected for recent episodes – we hope you enjoy them as much as we have!
I use my fabric scraps to make picnic quilts! I sew the scraps together and use oilcloth or vinyl tablecloth for the backing. You can use your serger or pinking shears or a decorative trim around the outside. The fabric scraps are nice to sit on and the reverse side of oilcloth or plastic you put near the ground, is easy to wipe off!

When you don’t know what pattern to quilt, you can use the backing fabric for your project for a quilting pattern!
I stitch from the back side and the design of the backing shows on the right side over piecing. I found this while making valentine table runners using a heart design. Any fabric works that is not too small and close.
