Workshop Wednesday: Dresden Plates

Dresden Plates are classic quilt blocks that make quite a statement when featured in quilts! Choosing colors and fabrics for these blocks is an important part of the quiltmaking process, as they add so much to the look of the quilt. You can create many different looks with a Dresden Plate by simply changing up the fabrics you use or tweaking the shape of the plate. I recently made my first Dresden Plate when I had to sew a color option for Abigail Dolinger’s Shortcut to Dresden in Quick Quilts March/April 2017. Aby used sweet, pastel prints to create Dresden throw quilt that would be perfect for a little girl. I used her pattern but substituted an earth toned VW Bus fabric to create a Dresden that could be made for a little boy.

Aby and I both used fusible web and machine applique to make our quilts but you can also hand applique Dresdens if that’s your preferred method of applique. Hand applique works well if you want to make a more traditional Dresden quilt like this quilt called Miss Kyra.

Dresden can be cozy and traditional or modern and spunky…

Dresden Plates can be used to make flowers for wall hangings or table runners…

Or to decorate your home for the holidays…

Dresden quilts can be easy or more challenging as these are…
